Screen time trackers can tell you something useful about digital eye strain, or they can just turn your eye health into one more dashboard to obsess over. That question has followed me through years of Austin freelance life spent staring down three monitors for a living. I've run two very different tracking setups against each other — one passive, one aggressively active — and comparing their eye-health data side by side turned out to be more useful than either app on its own.

My optometrist's term for it was Computer vision syndrome, which sounded official, but it didn't tell me what to actually change. That gap is where the tracking experiment started. Real-time tracking sits at the other end — a visible timer or menu-bar counter nagging you toward a break the second a threshold gets crossed. Treat them like two branches of the same codebase and the difference becomes obvious fast: one only tells you what happened after the fact, the other tries to change behavior while it's still happening.

Running both at once was less about picking a winner and more about seeing where they disagreed. A passive report might show a long, unbroken stretch of focus time and call it a productive day. A real-time tracker watching that same stretch would have fired several alerts I ignored because I was mid-debug and unwilling to context-switch. Neither number is wrong. They're just measuring different things.

What the Weekly Report Gets Right (and Where It Falls Short)

The passive approach is good at exposing patterns you'd otherwise deny to yourself, the kind of aggregate data that matters when you're also trying to find the signal in the noise of seven different eye supplements. Without a stable baseline of screen hours, a supplement can look like it's working just because a slow stretch happened to line up with it. That's the part of testing methodology most people skip: you need the boring, unglamorous denominator before any of the numerator makes sense.

A visible countdown in the menu bar is good at forcing a break; it's also good at turning your eyes into something you monitor instead of something you use. I started watching the timer more than my code, which is a strange kind of anxiety for something that's supposed to reduce stress. I noticed I'd stopped blinking naturally while waiting for permission to look away, something a spreadsheet never would have caught on its own. The Upside of Running Both Trackers Together

What doesn't make sense is running the aggressive version indefinitely once the habit sticks; at that point it's just measuring anxiety instead of preventing it.

Color-temperature shifts and blue-light filtering sit in a different category entirely — useful as a low-effort layer, but they're not a substitute for actually tracking how long you're staring at anything in the first place. And worth saying plainly, since I'm not a doctor or an optometrist: none of this data replaces an actual eye exam, it just gives you better questions to bring to one. Three years into full-time screen work, the distinction I've come to care about most is dry eye versus general fatigue — they show up in the tracking data differently, and treating them as the same problem is how you end up throwing the wrong fix at the wrong symptom.

This isn't an argument that everyone needs to track their screen time. It just means that if you're going to bother, comparing two approaches against each other is more informative than running either app alone. Treat it less like a fitness tracker and more like an A/B test you're allowed to abandon once you've got your answer.
